Dangerous Myth:
'It Doesn't Matter What They Say. . . .'
We've all heard it – "It doesn't
matter what they say about us as long as
they spell our name right." This quote
is attributed to P.T. Barnum who was speaking
long ago about publicity for his circus.
Then, the country was virtually free of
government regulation. There was no SEC,
no EPA, no OSHA. Public boycotts were rare.
It was infrequent for an employee to file
a suit against an executive. Old-timers
believed any publicity was good for their
product. But that was true only when there
were few brands and consumer awareness was
negligible. By comparison, an executive
then had it easy. For you, it's different.
Fact: It Does Matter
What They Say.
"Reputation Management" is serious
business. It matters very much what people
say about you personally, about your place
in the community, about your department,
or about your organization. The most admired
corporations like Federal Express, Alcoa,
Texas Instruments and Johnson & Johnson
nurture their reputations in strategic ways.
Even the most revered people take extra
pains to reinforce their presence, as exemplified
by Jimmy Stewart who relied on a PR professional,
John Strauss, as his personal communications
counselor for more than 45 years. Leaders
today, knowing that they must be better
communicators, seek help to an unprecedented
degree.
