'Tell the truth to the client.'
To set the stage for a successful coaching-consulting outcome, Joe Vranich adheres to the philosophy outlined in The Trusted Advisor by David H. Maister (et. al.):

We must always tell the truth and not what the client wants to hear. One of the greatest dangers to the client relationship is telling the client what he or she wants to hear, rather than what is in his or her best interests. . . . We should always try to make sure that our answer is not a purely technical one. And always ask how our work affects the client individually and personally. What are the financial implications? What are the job or role or career implications? We need to be eternally alert for what comes next for the client.

Coaching Code.
