What We Do

"You cannot become a leader without being an outstanding communicator," says Harvey Mackay, author of Swim With the Sharks Without Being Eaten Alive.

Whether you are a CEO speaking to employees, an executive appearing on national television, or a job seeker wanting the next great positon you all have one thing in common – you want audience impact that is (pick one: great, wonderful, grand, magnificent) regardless of whether your audience is a group or one person.

You can become an outstanding communicator through customized programs:

Public Speaking.
Presentations With Visuals.
Personal Expression and Leadership.
Career Coaching & “The Powerful Job Interview."

All of the work is tailored to your needs – a highly individualized effort that is Joe's hallmark with clients.

Public Speaking.
Goal: To increase your personal impact with internal and external audiences. Your Guide to Successful Speaking says, "The most important thing is that you have something to say . . . Without a clear, compelling message, even the cleverest presentation is pointless, like a beautifully wrapped package with no gift inside it."

We will design your message and the main supporting points in your speech. Are you trying to inform, persuade, motivate or inspire? And how will you do that? With statistics? With examples? By appealing to their self-interest? Are you looking back in time with nostalgia? Or toward the future with a sizzling challenge? To what degree are you conveying competence, courage and credibility – the three things audiences want to see in a speaker?

Joe will help you with your message – often called “point of view” – your relationship to the audience, and your presentation style. You will know the subject and the audience in ways that will reduce your anxiety. Your voice, body movements, and self-assurance will signal the audience that you believe they are important. With some work, the audience will see your comments as stimulating, informative, and perhaps even a bit entertaining.

We will work on “dry runs." We will examine content and speech structure. We'll look at behind-the-mike challenges such as your speaking volume, manner of gesturing, facial expression, eye contact, and “owning the space.”

When we're done, we'll have what you want – audience impact.

Will you be giving Congressional Testimony? Do you know that under the rules every committee member was given your testimony three days in advance? In many cases they're not listening to you but are simply waiting to ask their questions. This means your Q&A preparation must be thorough.

Presentations with Visuals.
Goal: To convey highly focused and memorable information while giving regard to the thinking, feeling and needs of the audience.

If using PowerPoint, we will be careful that techniques intended to bedazzle don’t diffuse your message and upstage you. (You are the show – not the slides.) Excessive reliance on PowerPoint can mean a presentation that has insufficient emotion or memorable passages to support your viewpoints. Your visuals can supplement your talk and showcase you instead of upstaging you. And a PowerPoint presentation needs many of the elements found in a good speech.

Personal Expression and Leadership.
Goal: To make your self-expression more credible and productive with your top executives, peers, and direct reports. Achieve greater success by enhancing your communications skills.

When you are a leader, even small gestures and offhand comments matter – a lot. What you say casually over a cup of coffee can be considered more important than what you say in a speech to all employees. Fair or not, others often believe the "real you" speaks over the cup of coffee – and that you somehow are less than authentic when behind a microphone.

We will address whether you are relaxed among some individuals and nervous among others inside and outside the organization. We will examine your leadership and communications styles and consider leading with your strongest traits. And you can learn how to evaluate other people's listening styles so as to tailor your comments instead of taking a one-size-fits-all approach.

Such coaching can have a positive impact not only on your career but on others throughout the organization.

Career Coaching & “The Powerful Job Interview."
Goal: To conduct a powerful campaign to increase the odds of landing your desired job. In-depth coaching that reviews your background, your motivations and your goals are an integral part of the program.

Joe has helped job seekers in many professions in all parts of the country with a comprehensive Career Coaching program. One focus is “The Powerful Job Interview." You can turn an "interrogation" into a comfortable conversation through simulated interviews centered around some of the toughest questions the prospective employer may ask you and insightful questions you might ask them. And you will learn other valuable techniques – like the best ways to begin and end interviews.

You decide your optimum career priorities and what parts of the program are right for you. You will use proven techniques to improve your résumé (which Joe can "co-write" with you), letters, emails and comments to prospective employers. You will be better prepared to use your network in a constructive manner. And you will learn how to negotiate compensation and other job-acceptance details.

Some people want to transition into a new profession, industry, or geographic location. Others have an imperative to survive the "whitewaters of our time" by finding work as soon as possible. Whatever the case, transitions are periods of opportunity. Joe will help you address the question, "What would be a wonderful way for me to spend the next period in my life?" The question may be difficult if you lack a keen understanding of the new roles and relationships required to succeed in the new environment. The coaching focus on who you are, your values and goals, and your style, will help you create a successful career transition.

The program is similar to what is offered by the big outplacement firms – but is less expensive because of the lack of major overhead.

The coaching, which will be tailored for you, is by telephone, as it is for clients across the nation. If you are in Orange County, Calif., the work could be in person.
